Inspired by Pucchini`s famed opera La Boheme, writer Jonathan Larson set out to recreate its classic story of bohemian struggle against the gritty backdrop of New York City`s Lower East Side in the early nineties. Years of work-shopping led to the creation of Rent, and though he sadly wouldn't live to see it, his rock musical would go on to be one of the great successes of the decade, spawning a feature film, winning multiple Tony Awards and running on Broadway for an astounding 12 years.
The show follows a group of aspiring young artists and creative thinkers struggling to survive against the odds of poverty, addiction and disease. Mark Cohen, an aspiring filmmaker, narrates the action as it follows him, his roommate and struggling musician Roger, their neighbour and drug-addicted dancer Mimi and the trio's circle of similarly dysfunctional yet lovable friends. It's won many accolades over the years for its honest and unflinching portrayal of the early AIDS epidemic, as well as for it's powerful score - musical numbers like "Seasons of Love," "La Vie Boheme" and "Light My Candle" have continuously resonated with young audiences.
