Description
On the northern outskirts of Waterloo lies St. Jacobs, a small yet flourishing village founded in the early 1800s by a community of Old-Order Mennonites whose descendants still farm the countryside with traditional practices today. At DH Food and Lodging, the heritage of this village is readily apparent in its tasteful decor and laidback atmosphere, though with a few modern touches to make any guest feel right at home.
A quaint shopping getaway
St. Jacobs is home to Canada’s largest year-round farmer’s market. Thousands of tourists flock to the region every Thursday and Saturday to browse stocks of freshly made cheeses, baked goods, meats, preserves and even craft beer from the local vendors. The market experienced a setback last year when a devastating fire took away their main building, but the community pulled together to erect a new temporary space in record time, and throngs of customers still managed to clean out the shelves of delicious food in a matter of hours. The village is also a great place to shop for unique clothes, rare antiques, one-of-a kind collectables and artful home decor.
Eat to your heart’s content
Restaurants in St. Jacobs country take full advantage of all the farm-fresh fare in their midst, offering tantalizing dishes made with the most seasonal ingredients. DH’s dining room is open beginning at lunch with a selection including summery Caprese salads, Yukon Gold potatoes and Ontario-raised lamb burgers; at dinnertime, the menu expands with grilled and oven-baked specialties, like beef tenderloin and osso buco.
Explore the outdoors
Happenings in St. Jacobs occur all year round, but good times really kick off in the spring with the Quilt and Fibre Art Festival, where locals come together to admire award winning quilters and embroiderers. Learn about the area’s rich heritage in a Mennonite farm tour, which takes you down country roads via horse-drawn trolley to get up close with the Old Order way of life, or hop on the Waterloo Central Railway for a swift overview of the market and village. A variety of trails weave through St Jacobs’ gorgeous countryside, and visitors often enjoy walking or cycling through them to explore the diverse birdlife and foliage.
