What You Get
A reserved seat ticket in any theatre section to see the LOT's production of Avenue Q, the hilarious hit Broadway musical that's often called "Sesame Street for grown-ups."
Description
Most statements seem to sound less upsetting when spoken by a puppet, which is why good HR departments keep one on hand in the office to announce employee layoffs or the end of free snacks in the break room. Curb your disappointment with today's WagJag for tickets to see Avenue Q at the Lower Ossington Theatre.
Often described as a Sesame Street for grown-ups, Avenue Q is an inventive and offbeat musical that follows a group of twenty-somethings, played by a combination of humans and puppets, searching for their life's purpose in New York City. Princeton, a freshly minted college graduate, arrives in town with lofty ambitions, but gets a heavy dose of the real world from the new people he meets in and around his new apartment complex. The show features a lot of brazen puppet antics and cheeky music - song titles like "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist," "I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today" and "The Internet Is for Porn" should provide a taste of the R-rated humour that's kept multiple audiences in stitches. Though Avenue Q originated on Broadway, the Lower Ossington Theatre's adaptation has had several successful runs and benefits greatly from the venue's more intimate space, which underscores very personal and relatable human themes.
Reviews
"The eight-person show is far stronger on this smaller scale, allowing the nuance and precision of the puppetry to carry the weight that it should...It's one thing to see a great production of a musical. But it's even more gratifying to see a great production of a musical that you hadn't even realized could be great." - Xtra.ca
"Underscored by outstanding performances, the Lower Ossington Theatres production of Avenue Q is packed with laughs, but also warmth, using the innocence of puppets to tell a very modern, true-to-life story that has something for everyone." - Theatreomania.ca
