Some family activities are memorable for the wrong reasons - like when an uncle gets trapped in the zoo's monkey pen - and some aren't remembered at all, like the time everyone got concussions after a visit to the batting cage. Make family time unforgettable with today's WagJag: $29 for a family maple syrup making experience, farm tour and pancake breakfast at Richardson's Farm (a $60 value).
Each family of four (two adults, two children) tours the farm via tractor or horse-drawn wagon ride through the Carolinian forest to see how maple syrup is made from start to finish. Grumbling tummies (and their owners) fill up first on a nice warm breakfast; the kids' meal includes a pancake, sausage, apple sauce, Richardson's maple syrup and a beverage, while adults chow down on two pancakes, three sausages, apple sauce, syrup and a beverage. Everyone gets a maple candy.
James Richardson's grandmother Dinah remembers gathering boiling sap with her father when she was a young girl in the early 1900s. In 1983, James tapped six trees around his parents' farm and boiled it in a cast iron kettle. In 1985, James and his cousin Jason built a shanty in the bush using scrap lumber and an old barn door. The end results were delicious, allowing five generations of syrup making to lead to the rebirth of Richardson's sugar bush.
Richardson's Farm is open from 9:30am until 2pm every day, except Sundays.
