The Merry Widow, German Die Lustige Witwe, comic operetta in three acts by Hungarian composer Franz Lehár premiered at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna in 1905. The operetta was to become one of the most popular in the repertoire. Its best-known selections are the final waltz duet “Lippen schweigen” and the soprano’s Act II aria “Vilja.” The Merry Widow has it all - rustic and folk elements throughout the work, evokes a polonaise, marches, Parisian cancans and gallops, a cafe song, and the most exquisite of waltzes. Lehár’s charming and skilful interweaving of musical colours is one reason for the great longevity of The Merry Widow.
Rene Fleming was the Met’s Merry Widow and our own Lucia Cesaroni takes the title role for TOT and for the Vancouver Opera…right here in Canada! Her co-stars will be Daniela Agostino, Matt Chittick, Michael Nyby and Gregory Finney. Larry Beckwith conducts the orchestra.
