The only religious Order founded in the Holy Land which continues to exist today, the Carmelites spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. They came to North America in 1864, first settling in the U.S. and then quickly moved to establish a foundation in Canada, settling in Niagara Falls in 1875.
